This page is updated regularly so do visit us often, if you can. You will be welcome. The philosophy of management varies from one to another. The thousands of books on the shelves of the larger bookstores bear witness to this.
Most of these isms and organizational theories new and old, depend for their success on a timeless underlying principle. The technical term for which is ‘common sense’.
Applying common sense can produce funny results ... especially when your common sense is a little different from the someone else’s common sense.
For example, when Sam Smith’s engineering company looked like it was facing disaster because the suppliers of some electronic components were selling them parts with a high fault rate, Sam tried everything to overcome the problem. His folk worked closely with the suppliers’ folk. They introduced quality assurance schemes ... you name they did it. The fault rate improved but not to the extent that his customers wanted.
Then one day, as they say, Sam noticed an article about a Japanese company and its success in the field of electronic components and how it was all down to something called total quality management. Desperate to try anything he faxed them an order for a trial 1,000 parts. Thinking himself a bit cheeky, he added that they needed 0.5% faults. He had been accepting about 8% faults from the existing suppliers so reckoned that the 0.5% request could be a tall order.
On the day, his 1,000 parts duly arrived. Sam wondered what had caused the stunned look of surprise on his production manager’s face when he had opened the box of parts. The production manager read out the delivery note to Sam. “Enclosed are your 1,000 parts as ordered. The 5 faulty parts you requested are in the small envelope inside the box.”
This firm’s attitude was one that assumed that everything would be done right. All of their folk subscribed to that philosophy. They became Sam’s best new supplier and they all lived happily ever after.
When you need the edge at work, the College’s management philosophy course delivers that advantage for you ...
