Corporate Social Concern - Good P.R. or just another diversion from from the main purpose of business? The unstoppable, ever-rolling bandwagon of Corporate Social Responsibility had a welcome boulder chucked in front of its progress down the hill when former Tory Chancellor, Norman Lamont gave his Keith Joseph Lecture. In his speech he successfully debunked much of the guff which is corporate social responsibility. However it may take a few more speeches to rid industry of the nonsense. This nonsense, like the nonsense of global warming being human caused, is driven by a powerful constituency of charlatans, PR folk and the bewildered do-gooders.
Imagine how you would have felt a few year ago if you had spent all of your life believing that Socialism was a good idea, and then within a few years the entire concept is exposed as baloney and worse.
And then, your Mecca, the Russian Soviet Union crumbles to dust before your eyes, and some of its leading lights own up to the evil sham. You are faced with three options. First, you can stick your head in the sand and wait for the whole world to go away. Second, you could wise up and start to come to grips with reality. And third, you could find another bandwagon with a wickedly stupid cause onto which you could leap.
Wonder of wonders, suddenly, just when you thought your world was going to end, you discover that you are spoilt for choice of bandwagons. You can even jump on half a dozen of them at the same time .. Global warming... YES, Elf and Safety ...YES, the European Soviet Union ... Brilliant, definite YES, National Identity Cards ... Hold me back, YES, Higher Taxes for folk who work ... Well they can afford it, YES, Lots of New Laws Banning things ... folk have to kept in their place for their own good so that’s another big YES.
